As we highlighted earlier this year, demand in AI projects has skyrocketed (+230% according to our Malt Tech Trends report), and no-code has become more and more of a thing (demand increased by 40% on Malt).
To help us all navigate what comes next, we sat down with Claire Lebarz, Malt's Chief Technology Officer, to discuss her vision for the tech landscape in 2026. Here are the key trends she sees defining the near future.
The growth in AI projects has been exponential. On Malt alone, we saw a 230% increase in the demand for AI projects globally, which shows a powerful appetite for scaling this technology. This rapid growth, however, brings new challenges. Claire notes that security awareness has not kept pace with this swift adoption: “2026 will be the year of AI security. AI is presenting new risk vectors - prompt injections in MCP and with AI browsers are real and underinvested, presenting major threats for individuals and companies.”
This creates a significant opportunity for skilled freelancers. While cybersecurity projects have also increased, the investment still falls short of the need. The real work ahead involves building security thinking directly into AI development. Governance, compliance, and model behavior must be managed with the same rigor as code quality.

You have likely heard the growing discussion around AI agents. Claire observes that while agent frameworks are getting a lot of attention, their actual deployment inside companies remains limited. We are still in a learning phase.
Making agents a reality requires a new level of architectural maturity, one that aligns cloud, security, and workflow automation in new ways. For now, most enterprise use cases continue to rely on RAG and workflow automation rather than on fully autonomous systems. According to Claire, “adoption of AI agents is just getting started: 2026 will still be a year of experimentation and growing adoption.”

Claire highlights that the traditional "backend-only" job description is likely to disappear fast, following a -14% decrease in demand as reported in Malt Tech Trends 2025. This shift is also bringing new, specialized roles to the forefront: “We’ve seen new roles like AI engineers, AI ops and AI project managers in high demand. We will most likely see more innovation around how tech and product teams are organized.”
