- INFRABEL,Quantitative Risk AnalystTRANSPORTATIONNovember 2017 - Today (8 years and 7 months)Bruxelles, Belgium1. Quantitative Risk Modelling (Monte Carlo Simulation):I carry out Monte Carlo simulations to quantify the risk of signal overrun under ETCS and other railway signalling systems.
- Development of mathematical models to simulate ETCS braking curves using probabilistic techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation.
- Assessment of signal overrun probability under different speed assumptions to quantify the safety benefit of ETCS.
- Analysis and reporting of quantitative results to senior management.
Tools: Crystal Ball (Excel add-on for Monte Carlo Simulation).2. Safety Analyses (PHI / PHA):I perform Preliminary Hazard Identification (PHI) and Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA) related to regulatory changes (STI OPE as defined by the European Union Agency for Railways – ERA) and technical evolutions in signalling and train-protection systems.- Identification and evaluation of new hazards resulting from regulatory or technical changes.
- Application of relevant safety assessment standards (EN 50126 for RAMS lifecycle management and EN 50129 for safety-related signalling systems) when modifications concern signalling or control-command systems.
- Documentation, traceability, and reporting for safety case justification and stakeholder review.
Tools: PHA Pro (Sphera). - INFRABEL,Senior Railway Traffic Simulation EngineerTRANSPORTATIONJanuary 2012 - November 2016 (4 years and 10 months)Bruxelles, BelgiumMy job was to support infrastructure investment decisions through rigorous, objective, and quantitative analysis.Projects: I was responsible for more than 30 infrastructure modification projects (addition or removal of tracks, switches, junctions, etc.) across the Belgian railway network. For each project, I developed reliable infrastructure and traffic models based on operational assumptions. These models were iteratively refined until the simulated results accurately matched real operating conditions. Once validated, they were used to simulate and evaluate future network and traffic configurations.Tasks / Competencies / Expertise:
- Macroscopic and microscopic railway modelling
- Robustness analysis in accordance with UIC standards
- Runtime and maximum load analysis for freight and passenger operations
- Design of optimized and regular timetables considering signalling constraints headway times, runtimes, dwell times, and connections)
- Quantitative impact analysis of infrastructure modifications on timetable performance and capacity
- Preparation of technical and management reports for executive decision-making
- Strong understanding of railway operations, signalling principles, and capacity modelling
- Proven ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary projects and understand customer requirements
Tools:- DEMIURGE (SNCF, France): Macroscopic modelling tool using linear mathematical optimization (C-PLEX algorithm) to design and optimize transport plans based on assumptions regarding train operations and infrastructure.
- LUKS (via-con.de, Germany): Microscopic modelling of existing infrastructure, including all signals and routes, enabling detailed timetable design and conflict analysis.
- Runtime / Routing Applications (Internal Development):Designed and developed in VBA (Excel/Access interface). Widely used by Infrabel engineers for rapid preliminary infrastructure assessments.
- INFRABEL,Project Manager AssistantTRANSPORTATIONNovember 2007 - December 2011 (4 years and 1 month)Bruxelles, BelgiumProjects: I was involved into the Regional Express Network. The purpose is to improve mobility inside Brussels capital by increasing the railway capacities and services from the centre of Brussels to about 30 km outside the capital. To reach this goal many railroad have to extend their capacities by passing from two to four ways and by implementing new stations. The project comprises works of civil engineering for the superstructure, bridges, tunnels and stations, catenaries works for electrical supply and signalization works (ETCS level 2). Today, the total cost of the project is over 1billons euros.Tasks: The global project was dived into many sub-projects including essentially work of civil engineering. As sponsor of a part of them, I was directly in contact with the Project Manager of the sub-contractor company who executes the projects. My principal task was to make a planning, cost and quality monitoring of our different sub-projects.*Civil works: Monitoring/report, specification control, critical path, PERT Analysis *Budget (average of 20 million € per sub-projects): Monitoring/report, negotiations with sub-contractor, Monte Carlo Simulation. *Building permits: monitoring, negotiations *Administrative: report to high level managementCompetencies:*Project
