English Teacher

Kyoto, Japan

July 2002 - August 2005 (3 years and 1 month)

During my three years in Kyoto I worked as an English teacher, a member of the 'JET' Programme. The main reasons for me joining the JET programme were because it allowed me to have a once in a lifetime experience learning a new culture and language, I could also apply myself to a totally new challenge, something I felt could not be turned down and would be beneficial to myself and my career. Responsibilities included teaching and planning all English lessons at five primary schools, one secondary school of children aged between 6-15 years old, and also an adult class. I had been based in a very small town of 8,500 people working for Yagi town's Board of Education. To enable me to work efficiently with the other teachers I had to improve my Japanese to enable me to communicate effectively with my peers. My role also included teaching English to adults at the local community centre. In addition, as a member of the town Hall I had to perform official roles and assisted in the implementation of a PC role out, along with other technical tasks. Duties included speeches in Japanese and keeping an English and Japanese diary that was published on the local town website.
